Frequently Asked Questions
Who will be attending RYC?
RYC was started as a ministry to the Orthodox Presbyterian Church (OPC) Presbytery of the South. Specifically, this includes the OPC churches in Florida, Alabama and Louisiana. We have extended the invitation to several other churches of which we have relationships, including those in the PCA and the RPC.
RYC is available for OPC youth outside of our Presbytery, youth from other churches and those that may not currently have a church home. RYC is for students entering 6th grade through those that have just completed 12th grade.
Can I invite friends to RYC?
Certainly. As long as there is space available for campers, you may feel free to invite your Middle School and High School friends to join us.
How many counselors will be there?
The number of counselors will be determined at the close of registration and will be based on the number of students enrolled. We anticipate there will be a minimum of one counselor for every ten students at RYC. There will be additional staff involved with maintaining and running the camp onsite as well. Total staff (counselors and other staff) is expected to be about one for every five students.
Can I bring my iPod/cell phone/music?
Some church counselors will permit you to bring these items for the trip to camp; however, no electronic devices are allowed to be used at RYC. It is strongly recommended that you leave these items at home during the week or with your counselor at camp. Emergency contact information will be provided to parents/guardians in the event that they need to reach you.
What are the differences for Middle School and High School students attending RYC? Are they going to be together for all activities and lessons?
We believe that there is a great deal that all students can learn from each other in any of these grades. There are benefits of having group activities with the entire range of ages. Most activities will be camp-wide, including all students attending RYC. Meals will be together, games and the main sessions with Pastor Watkins. He is specifically gearing these times to reach the entire range of students attending, challenging them while making the teaching age-appropriate.
We do recognize some differences in the ages involved. We will have additional teaching times that may be separated by Middle School and High School students. These may also be further divided at times by gender, separating male and female campers into smaller groups for some discussions.
How will the campers be arranged in cabins?
Certainly male and female students will stay in separate cabins. Students from a church will be housed with the other students from their same church as much as possible. The counselor sent from a church will be housed in the cabin with the students from that church. In some cabins, there are multiple rooms where students will sleep. It will be up to the RYC staff to determine the breakout among cabin rooms, if necessary.
Do the cabins have their own bathrooms? Air Conditioning?
This year all of the cabins in use are air conditioned and have bathrooms in the cabins. Additional bathrooms are also available at the camp site in close walking distance from the cabins if needed.
